Rochester, NY. Megan Paige is a driven police investigator whose commitment to the job borders on obsession. The only other aspect o her life that receives any attention is her significant other Kenneth Shine, who just so happens to be a lieutenant with he RFD (and jockeying for the same promotion as Megan). They're currently working on one of their worst cases yet, the murder/rape of ten- year- old Carla Castillo...and when Megan puts it together that she was murdered in Churchville, Megan becomes convinced that they are dealing with a serial killer. She becomes so caught up in her work that she begins to have hallucinations...and a bloody Carla begins to haunt her regularly.
When Megan cannot crack the case (and worse, her boss Captain Gullikson pulls her off it), it pushes her over the edge and Megan suffers a nervous breakdown. She's diagnosed with an adult onset of paranoid schizophrenia that finds her in a psychiatric hospital instead of her precinct.
