Jakob's story (Robbie Kay) begins in Poland in 1942, when he is nine years old. Nazi soldiers have murdered his parents and abducted his teenage sister, Bella. Traumatized by this horrific event, Jakob sneaks out of his hiding place and struggles to survive. He is found by Athos Roussos (Rade Sherbedgia), a Greek archaeologist working at a Polish dig site in Biskupin. Moved by the child's plight, Athos boldly smuggles Jakob out of Poland and hides him in his home on the island of Zakynthos in Greece, also occupied by the Germans. Jakob spends the last years of the Occupation in Athos' tender care.
After the war, Athos and Jakob immigrate to Canada, where Athos has accepted a teaching position with a University. As he matures, Jakob (now played by Stephen Dillane) begins a new life, studying, writing, and eventually falling in love with Alex (Rosamund Pike), a beautiful young woman. Yet he remains haunted by his parents' death and the question of his sister's fate...

In a public lecture, Seldom quotes Wittgenstein‘s Tractatus to deny the possibility of truth. Martin contests by asserting his faith in the mathematics under reality. Later, Martin and Seldom coincide and attempt to reconcile their apparent differences. This impromptu meet however leads both men to discover Martin‘s landlady (also a friend of Seldom‘s) brutally murdered. Seldom declares to the police that he had received a note with his friend‘s address marked as "the first of a series". As Seldom is an authority on logical series, he suspects that a serial murderer is defying his intelligence – murdering his friends one–by–one in an apparent attack on the professor. Martin, Seldom and Lorna (Leonor Watling), a Spanish nurse, will try to guess the following terms of the series as the murders continue.

He sobered up, became a devout Christian, married a wonderful woman, and fathered four new sons. All of who received proper names. His life became a model that most would aspire to, a man successful in business, community and family. His only true failing being the sons he turned his back on.
